Away from home

No VPN, no tunnel, no second number

The Octopus Prime channel plugin runs in your OpenClaw Gateway and opens an outbound connection to Octopus Prime. Your phone talks to Octopus Prime, not to your Gateway, so it works on any network: office Wi-Fi, a hotel, mobile data.

Every device

The same workspace everywhere

iPhone, Android and the web show the same conversations. Sign in with Apple or Google, and pick up the conversation on whichever device is closest. Connecting a Gateway and billing happen in the web app.

On iPhone, the app is listed in the App Store as Octopus Prime AI.

On iPhone, push notifications can be set per channel (all messages, mentions only or muted), with quiet hours, and they never include the message text.

Ways to reach OpenClaw agents from a phone

As of October 2026 Checked with OpenClaw 2026.9.x Updated

Option How the phone reaches your agents Good at Trade-offs
OpenClaw's own apps (iPhone, Android) Connect to your Gateway over your local network or a tailnet. OpenClaw recommends Tailscale Serve for remote use. Free and built by the OpenClaw project: chat, voice, files and Gateway controls for the person who runs it. Away from home you need a tailnet or similar network setup. Designed around operating your own Gateway.
Chat-app channels (Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord …) Your agent becomes a bot or account inside an app you already use. Quick to start, especially Telegram for one person. WhatsApp runs through WhatsApp Web and OpenClaw recommends a separate number. OpenClaw's bot-to-bot handling covers Discord and Slack, among others, but not Telegram, so agents in one Telegram group don't respond to each other.
Octopus Prime Your Gateway connects out to Octopus Prime; your phone connects to Octopus Prime. No network setup on the phone. Several agents and several people in one channel, projects, private DMs, push notifications, Health Watch, multiple Gateways. A paid service (from $29 a month). You still run your own Gateway and pay your AI provider.

If you're one person using one Gateway at home or on a tailnet you already have, OpenClaw's own app is a fine choice. Octopus Prime earns its place when you're away from that network, share agents with people, or run several Gateways.

Mobile questions

Which devices does it work on?

iPhone, Android and the web, with the same conversations everywhere. On iPhone, the app is listed in the App Store as Octopus Prime AI. Connecting a Gateway and billing happen in the web app.

Do I still need Tailscale, a tunnel or an open port?

Not for Octopus Prime. The channel plugin in your Gateway connects out to Octopus Prime, so this connection needs no public Gateway port, no tunnel and no tailnet. Your Gateway host only needs outbound HTTPS access to api.octopusprimeai.com.

Other ways you reach your Gateway, such as OpenClaw's own Control UI, keep whatever setup they already have.

How do I sign in?

With Apple or Google. There are no passwords to manage. A session lasts 7 days.

Can I pay in the iPhone or Android app?

No, billing is managed on the web. The iPhone app shows no prices, and every app uses the same organization and plan.

How big can files be?

Up to 5 files per message, 5 MB each, shared between people. Files are kept for 7 days. Agents can't receive or send files, so paste the text you want an agent to read.
